flashpacking versus backpacking: A questionnaire to highlight the impacts of mobile technologies on the backpacking activity HELP! :)

Hey everyone!

My name is Lara and I am desperately looking for helping hands from everyone to complete my very short and simple questionnaire(8questions).
I am on my final year at Leeds Metropolitan University- UK, and I have chosen to focus on the impacts globalization and technologies developments have had on the backpacking activity...so I found this blog which I thought was a great way to gather participants.
Promisse that it will not take long to fill it up and your participation will be the most valuable data for the development of this study.
The only minor issue is that despite the topic involving technologies I am bit 'zero' on using them myself, thus I will have to ask anyone interested in supporting my project to contact me on the e-mail address provided as follow, so I can attach the questionnaire.
THANK YOU PEOPLE OF THE WORLD!!!!!

PLEASE CONTACT ME ASAP!The deadline is the 10th of April 2008.
Don't hesitate to contact me!

I love how Facebook has a mobile component, it's real good (and the main site looks fine in Opera Mini 3 anyway!) but I've found that mPals has just launched this week, and is a neat little mobile networking mobi site, maybe you wanna check it out and say hello to me?

mpals.mobi (but you can go there on your computer, and you need to update your profile at mpals.mobi/web/ )

The coders / creators are real cool, and I hope to make mPals a daily destination myself.

Hi, I noticed a mention here earlier about a file, the colourfully named mytiti.sis, which infects phones over bluetooth. I work with a mobile anti-virus company, SimWorks (http://www.simworks.biz) and would very much like to obtain a copy of the file so that we can analyse it and send an update out to our customers.

If anyone could help me out I'd be most grateful.

Kind regards,
Aaron.

Check out www.juicecaster.com. They're doing some interesting stuff in the moblogging/mobile community space. Their newest thing is called Mediabox and it lets you put a box on any website that accepts html (myspace, blogger, friendster, etc). It instantly displays any movies or pics you upload from your phone. Not supported on all handsets and carriers yet, but pretty cool. What do you all think?

Just thought it might be nice to see who's wandering the halls of the MCD tribe...

To get things started off:
I go to the University of Queensland in Brisbane Australia. I am however American, I just decided to get out while the gettin was good. I'm doing a PhD in what amounts to an information design program. I'm researching Mobile Community Design, or basically how the design of mobile devices will be affecting the development of communities that move. I'm also interested in related concepts of group coordination/awareness, social capital and effects of design on behavior. I also run the mobile community design blog.
We've developed quite a few ideas based on watching travellers doing tourist activities and interviewing them in various ways. We are also looking at ways to graph their behavior to help inform design.

Hi there

I would like to introduce myself as someone interested in elearning, the development of the mobile device and the future of mobile learning. I have also read about Mobile Community Design, and would appreciate your expertise and knowledge in this area.

I am currently in my final semester at RMIT University, Melbourne, undertaking a masters in Virtual Communication. As a final stage research project, I am undertaking research on mobile learning and the mobile user experience within the education sector.

As part of my research I would be very grateful if you (or any colleagues who are mobile content developers) would participate in an online questionnaire regarding your (or your company's) involvement in the interface design and the user experience for the mobile platform. Your responses would be used only for the purpose of research into this area.

The online questionnaire will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

It can be accessed at the following URL:

http://www.keysurvey.com/survey/81175/1104/

The questionnaire will be available online until 28 October 12.00 PM EST. If you have any questions regarding the research or this survey, or wish to view the results of the research, please don't hesitate to contact me via the email address below.

Thank you in advance for your participation!

It is about a simple device playing audio track with stories. The stories are choosen by being linked to GPS coordinates.

I can't wait untill phones could do that. I've heard the thing is delaying GPS in phones is the power consumption by GPS.

I've just gotten a website up listing my current research projects. They all relate to ethnography and design of mobile groups. We're focusing on backpackers in Australia as a design space. Please post any thoughts on the research!
veggie power aPHRODESIA @ ELBO ROOM THIS FRIDAY

Aphrodesia’s “Veggie Oil Power Fundraiser” Friday, March 11 at the Elbo Room, San Francisco

Aphrodesia, the explosive San Francisco-based afrobeat ensemble that made national headlines last summer by driving cross country in a vegetable oil-powered bus as part of the “Just Vote Tour”, will headline a “Veggie Oil Power Fundraiser” on March 11 at the Elbo Room in San Francisco. All the band’s proceeds from the show will go towards its new vegetable oil powered bus, a converted city transit bus from Santa Clarita, California.

Born in San Francisco a little over two years ago, the 11-member Aphrodesia has won national accolades both for its music and its commitment to social activism. The East Bay Express picked the band’s first CD, “Shackrobeat Vol. 1”, as one of its top albums of 2003, and the band’s live performances have earned raves everywhere from the pages of Global Rhythm Magazine to Jambase.com. Meanwhile, the band’s “Just Vote Tour”, a nationwide voter registration-themed tour focusing primarily on swing states and landing in New York City during the Republican National Convention, deposited the band on the cover of USA Today, and the Bay Area-based Common Ground Magazine featured the band on its cover because of its commitment to driving on alternative fuel.

The band’s habit of driving in a vegetable oil-powered vehicle is more than just window dressing. “We want to walk the walk as well as talk the talk,” explains founder and bassist Ezra Gale. “We can’t be anti-war and pro-environment and drive around in a big petroleum-fueled tour bus,” he adds.

Aphrodesia’s old bus, a converted airport shuttle bus nicknamed the “Votemobile” for the cross-country ‘Just Vote Tour’, carried the band at least 10,000 miles solely on vegetable oil. The band plans to continue that tradition in its new bus, which is equipped with 300-gallon vegetable oil tanks and is considerably better suited to carrying a band of Aphrodesia’s size. To help pay the costs of the new bus and of converting it to run on vegetable oil, the band is throwing a “Veggie Oil Power Fundraiser” at the Elbo Room on March 11, with all proceeds going towards the cost of the new bus.

“Veggie Oil Power Fundraiser” featuring Aphrodesia with DJ Oaty Love, Friday, March 11, at the Elbo Room, 647 Valencia,, SF, (415) 552-7788, 10PM- 2 AM; $7-$20 donation requested.

I have a technology that allows individuals to create custom interfaces for mobile devices. It allows you to completely redesign all the elements of the interface (signal strength, battery, message indicator, etc...) and include custom elements you choose (links to sites, applications). The technology takes your design and turns it into a functional interface which can be downloaded by a device. Once on the phone it becomes the default interface of the phone and fucntions just like the standard interface users are used to.

Now, I'm looking for some folks that would are interested in making mobiles more usable, dynamic, interesting to put some interfaces together. I'm not trying to sell you a product or charge you for anything. I just want to see what some talented people can do with the technology. Drop me a line if you are interested.

Hi, I noticed a mention here earlier about a file, the colourfully named mytiti.sis, which infects phones over bluetooth. I work with a mobile anti-virus company called SimWorks and would very much like to obtain a copy of the file so that we can analyse it and send an update out to our customers.

If anyone could help me out I'd be most grateful.

Kind regards,

mobile social software

From my wiki http://www.artcom-studio.com/kwiki/index.cgi?MobileSocialSoftware

There are uses for SocialSoftware in public places. With the spread of programmable mobile devices all those applications are just waiting to be written. For some time allready I am contemplating how SocialSoftware can be used in bars, clubs, pubs and all the other places where people go to meet strangers and have fun together. Here is a list of applications for such software:

1. Where are my friends? You'd like to know where your friends are having fun today (or even this hour). The advantage of mobile technology here is that the information is updated in real time - so that people changing bars can find each other.
2. What club is the most popular today?
3. Who is here? People can leave some advertised information about them (it might be anonymous), which would be sent to everybody who is in the same bar as they.
4. Chat with someone in the bar. After choosing some advertisement you could exchange messages with the person owning it. The advantage over traditional online chat is that you know this person is in the same bar as you.
5. What is the music there (in real time)?
6. Bar owners could use this system for advertising happy hours etc.

Interface

The mobile devices interface has very limited capabilities and can not be used for more sophisticated tasks. I propose to give the system two interfaces - mobile and internet. The internet interface would be used for more complicated tasks (like setting up lists of friends, or typing longish advertisements) that don't need to be done in real time.

Business models

In constrast to internet people are accustomed to pay for mobile services. Telecoms offer some share of their income to application operators, this share is rather small (less than 30% for SMS based applications last time I asked) - but the cost of running such a system is not big. So the business model seems to be sound to me.

Anybody wants to deploy such a system?

what'd y'all think of the symbolic representations of social behavior?
http://www.mobilecommunitydesign.com/archives/000036.php

I think Tribe could benefit from a few of these things. Maybe a little graph showing most active members in a tribe, something showing people watching vs. talking, or maybe an 'interest meter' based on how often people view new topics... the sky is the limit for these things.

The wide variety of applications people use phones for is amazing. I particularly liked the innovative software applications such as the program that tracks ovulation times and the compass. Also predictable to see the thumb-strain problems arrising from the horrible use of a numeric keypad to enter large amounts of text.

Vodafone NZ has just launched a service with the new Sharp GX20 cellphone. It is called Video PXT and lets you record a 20 second video and send it to any MMS capable cellphone for around US 30 cents.Apparently it even has a video light so you can take video from your favourite dimly lit location.

it's an interesting example of technology giving opportunities for social interaction, and people identifying with one another based on the tech they use.

Mobile communication devices are affecting our social networks of friends, co-workers, family, lovers, etc. The PDA, phone and internet are rapidly converging into a device that fits in your pocket or backpack. the design of these things affects who we meet and what possibilities become available to us.

Barry Wellman has done sociology studies that lead to the conclusion that we have less geographical boundries on our social relations now and stay more in contact with people at a distance. Hence there may be less contact with those in our immediate vicinity.

particularly fascinating are communities that actually move (like gypsies) and also networks of people who don't stay in one place, but who keep contact with the same people in one communal region (like tribers on wi-fi pdas).

I'm interested in any examples of people doing this or your thoughts on the future of an increasingly mobile society...

nokia n-gage

The largely unreported story surrounding the hype of the Nokia n-gage mobile phone/game console is that they're a usability nightmare. Apparently:
1. you have to remove the battery to put in a new game
2. it needs a new card for each game you play
3. the speaker for the phone was put in the wrong place requiring people to talk awkwardly into the side of it
Nokia must have replaced the human-factors team with a marketing team, which really isn't like them.
Here's photo-evidence:
It's a highly visible example of design trade-offs you have to take when combining products that do tasks that reqire radically different form factors.
